Since the start of 2017, many changes within the world have started to happen. Donald Trump becoming the new president of the United States came with many upset people across the globe. Not only does the election of Donald Trump affect United States citizens, it also places a strong impact on other countries and their people around the world. Trump has planned to deport more than 218 million people from the United States along with placing a ban on refugees from entering the country. His acts of deportation and denying entry are causing riots and disturbance worldwide. The sudden disturbance and riots caused many journalist to report on the topic from many different points of view. 


Not only do journalists use social media to report on political issues, but even the politicians themselves are active users when it comes to social media. For example, President Donald Trump uses it daily to report on his plans for out country and updates on political issues. By him using Twitter, it is easy for the world to become aware of important new political things happening not only for the U.S., but for the other countries it may affect.

It was no secret that Trump wanted to make it difficult to impossible for refugees to immigrate into the United States. He used social media to post about it often, so that the world was fully aware of his plan. Shortly after Trump’s new immigration policies were put into play, riots had begun to breakout. The large airports in America were the target areas of the anti-immigration policies protest. According to CNN, “The affected airports included Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Dallas, New York’s JFK, Raleigh, Houston, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta and more” (CNN). These protests were said to be similar to the women’s rights protests which took place one week prior. Protesters carried colorful signs through the airport terminals while chanting “no hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here”. With the advancement of technology, it was easy for journalist and reporters to become aware of the protests almost immediately after they had begun. Majority of the people involved in the protests were posting on some form of social media such as Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, to make it known that they were there. This is how the journalist received their information on where to go in order to report on the political riot happening. 


Overall, Trump’s presidency has been one of the most controversial elections in the history of the United States. Though his actions have upset many people, he is staying true to his word and doing exactly what he said he was going to do. The new immigration policies should be no surprise to anyone considering it is precisely what Trump stated his plans were. His plan from the beginning was to build a wall separating the United States from Mexico, as well as deport the illegal citizens. More likely than not these protests will continue throughout the country in spite of President Trump. With the ongoing continuation of anti-Trump protests, journalist will continue to use social media to their advantage to report on the issue. Social media helps them become aware of the incidents they will report on, however it is ultimately up to the journalist himself on how he/she wants to go about portraying the topic. Journalist have the ability to make a political rally look positive or negative depending on how the choose to display it. For instance, the tweet below contains a link that brings you to a video by a Russian-American journalist talking about Trump’s actions and values as president. This video contains facts, as well as bias opinions by the journalist about Trump, which plays into how the people who view the video will think of him. 


Guest Speaker Ana López

On Wednesday April 5th, we were lucky to have had a guest speaker, Ana López come and speak to our Journalism 2.0 class. López studied traditional journalism and worked at a communication agency for three years as a journalist. In 2009, she started to work for the beer company, Estrella Damm, and still currently works there today. She spoke to us about brand advertising and marketing which I found to be very interesting and informative. I never really considered how advertisements would have been before social media was as popular as it is now. López started her marketing and advertising career in 2009, so she was able to share with us how it all worked before they had begun to use social media. My first thought was how difficult it must have been to use traditional advertisements compared to the online platforms we use today.

Before Ana López came in to speak to us, I conducted some of my own research on her. Just by typing in her name to google, I found her LinkedIn account. By viewing her LinkedIn account I could tell that she did a lot of PR and marketing work. The first thing I noticed under her “experience” section was that she was the founder of a company called “LaLopez” which started in January 2016. “LaLopez” is a digital marketing consultancy. The assumption I made after seeing this was that this was her own company, hence the name and due to the fact that she was the founder. I also noticed that she worked for the Image Creativity Center located in San Fransisco. I was very surprised by this because all the other companies she worked for were located in Spain. It made me think of some questions to ask her about how she ended up working for a company based in San Fransisco. Finally, I was entrigued by the fact that she worked for Estrella Damm, because it was the only company I had heard of before on her LinkedIn. I also found her WordPress account when I typed in her name to google, which helped me obtain more knowledge on her.

Just in the short period of time Ana López was speaking to us, I was able to learn about many different advertising and marketing tactics. For instance, she explained to us the ways the company she works for, Estrella Damm, choses to use their social media platforms. She pulled up the Estrella Damm Instagram account for us to view. The first thing she asked us was what we noticed and thought about the account. My first thought was I was surprised that I couldn’t see any photos of the beer, Estrella. I didn’t quite understand why a beer companies Instagram account would not post any photos of the beer itself. The only photos that were on Estrella Damm’s Instagram were pictures of landscapes and beautiful scenery. Then, Ana explained to us that their marketing strategy for this was because the most commonly viewed photos on Instagram are ones of landscapes. The company found that more people would be inclined to follow the account if the photos were of landscapes.


Within five years of working for Estrella Damm, Ana was promoted to the head of Digital marketing. Ana also showed us youtube videos of Estrella Damm’s advertisements. This advertisement was the first commercial Estrella Damm released in 2009 which was also referred to as their music video. The song that was used for the video was played by an unknown band, which gained extreme popularity after this commercial was released. The companies brand went up by 200% after the video was released was well.

Estrella Damm continues to release commercials each year. These commercials continue to help the brand increase in popularity. When comparing new videos to the old, you can see how they have evolved over the years.

Marketing and PR

A companies use of marking skills can greatly affect the success or failure of their products. Companies no longer have to rely on the use advanced advertising to make their product popular. The most important thing in todays day in age is that a company knows how to successfully use social media networks in order to get their products publicity. Two of the most effective social media networks to use for marketing are Facebook and Twitter. Big companies such as Apple, Dell, and Amazon use twitter for PR by replying to their customers concerns, as well as offering special deals to their followers.


Adidas recently released an article stating that they are going to leave behind the television advertisements and focus solely on digital media engagement. By the year 2020, Adidas expects to quadruple their e-commerce sales revenue as a result of the increase in their digital advertisements. They started to realize that the up and coming generations main source of information is obtained through mobile devices. Adidas explained that they are aware they will need to go above and beyond with their digital media marketing due to the fact that most companies are doing it as well. They plan to invest a great deal in advanced manufacturing methods and 3-D printing.



Nike is another company that uses all forms of media in order to advertise their products. Nike specifically is known for sponsoring athletes and sports teams, to have them wear their products for advertising purposes. The company uses the growing popularity of social media to help with advertising their products.  Often times, the athletes in which Nike sponsor, will post photos on their Instagram of the products and tag Nike in it. This creates positive publicity for the company because when fans of the athlete see someone they admire wearing the product, they are more likely to go out and buy it. There are many different athletes that are sponsored by Nike.  Olympic track and field sprinter, Allyson Felix is one of the many athletes Nike sponsors.

As you can see in the photos above, Allyson Felix is wearing all Nike products in both pictures. This is one of her requirements thats comes along with being sponsored by Nike. Having an olympic athlete wear the products helps generate positive PR for the company. Along with that, Allyson Felix posts photos to her personal Instagram of the Nike products that she receives, tagging them in each picture.

Valentí Sanjuan

On Wednesday, March 22nd, our Journalism 2.0 class was fortunate enough to have guest speaker, Valentí Sanjuan, come in and talk to us. Prior to hearing Valentí share his story, I did some research on him so that I would be educated on what he was going to talk to us about. My lack of knowledge on the Spanish language limited me to what I could learn about him before class. My only assumptions about Valentí Sanjuan before entering class on Wednesday were that he appeared to be some form of journalist, as well as an athlete. Once I typed in his name into google, YouTube videos of him biking came up. After watching little clips of these videos is when I came up with the assumption he was an athlete. Also, I knew he was involved with a television network called, “Visto Lo Visto,” because this network kept appearing whenever I searched his name. However, I was unaware of what his involvement with “Visto Lo Visto” included.

After conducting my research, I was very anxious for Wednesday’s class to learn about Valentí, and see if my assumptions about him were correct. I quickly learned that I was right to assume he was some form of journalist. Sanjuan started his journalism career about fifteen years ago as a traditional journalist as well as a radio personality. This was all before online platforms for journalism were as common as they are today. Eventually, Valentí transitioned into online media platforms and posted his first video on the YouTube channel, “vistolovistoTV”.  I was surprised to find out that “Visto Lo Visto” was not a television network, however it was a YouTube channel. I was under the impression that this was a television network similar to ABC or NBC, but once Valentí began to talk about it and show us videos, I learned that I was wrong. Visto Lo Visto is considered to be a comedy entertainment show, with guest speakers, comedians, and an array of recurring characters. This channel consitists of having a live audience while being filmed and is later uploaded to YouTube. The YouTube channel has roughly one thousand subscribers, in addition to having many people online streaming the program.

Once Valentí obtained a strong fan base, is when he begun to receive sponsorship opportunities from many different companies. He showed us a video of one of his shows where “Sony” was the brand that was sponsoring that particular episode. They had to showcase “Sony” in a short clip during the episode to show the products that Sony offers.  Valentí also showed us one of his videos that his sister recorded of them participating in a triathlon in Hawaii. This video has almost 390,000 views on YouTube which is an extremely large amount considering the video is over an hour long. He has competed in many different triathlons around the world that he has also filmed and uploaded to YouTube. These triathlons are funded by t-shirt sales, books, and other products he sells.

I really enjoyed hearing what Valentí had to share with our class. My favorite part about his lecture was that I could really hear the passion in his voice when he was talking about what he does. You could tell he really loves his life and enjoys his business. It is not easy to become a self-branded YouTuber, but Valentí truly loves it and has fun while working. Now thats what I call living the dream. It gave me hope for my future career, knowing that it is possible to have fun while working, if you’re doing something you’re passionate about. It is inspiring to learn about how one person can create such a large platform for themselves through the internet and become such a huge success. One thing he said that really stuck with me was how he has many different bosses. His bosses include himself, his sponsors, the social media accounts he uses (mainly YouTube), and his viewers. He explained to us that without his viewers, he would be nothing. If he didn’t get support from all his fans, he would never have made it to where he is today. Valentí stated that when you lose your audience you are “completely out”. Ultimately, his viewers are what keeps his company alive and what has helped make him such a success.

At the end of his lecture, another student in class asked Valentí if he had any motivational quotes he said to himself when he was having a hard time with his work or in his life. Valentí responded and stated “one day the funeral make-up person is going to shave you”. I was very confused by this at first and didn’t really understand how this quote motivated him when he was having a hard time. Then he explained what it meant to him and told us it is his way of saying “make the most of your life while you still have the time”. You can tell that this is a quote Valentí Sanjuan truly lives by through everything he showed us and talked about during our class. I hope that one day I become as successful as Valentí, and have as much fun doing it as he does!


Instagram is a social media network that quickly gained popularity when it was created in October of 2010. When Instagram was first created, its sole purpose was for editing and sharing photos. However, now Instagram is useful for multiple different purposes such as business, networking, advertising, and modeling. For instance, many people are now obtaining jobs just by posting photos on their Instagram. Numerous different companies will see a girl with a large number of followers Instagram, then offer her free products such a clothes if she agrees to post a photo in them and tag the company. This happens more often than most people realize especially for young, trendy women. A company that is known to do this is Beyoumini Swimwear.



Beyoumini Swimwear uses their Instagram account to search for girls to model their bikinis. Specifically, they call it a “collab” meaning they offer you free products if you post photos in the product and tag them in return. Typically the girls they search for are between the ages of 18-25 and have a high number of Instagram followers. Once they find someone, they will direct message the girl explaining what they have to offer. It is accounts like this one that provide jobs and modeling opportunities for young women. Not only does it benefit the women receiving the free products, it also helps the company because they advertise the swimwear.

Instagram is also beneficial for companies because they offer the opportunity for you to buy advertisements. Therefore, a company can buy and advertisement on Instagram that will show up on everyones feed even if they do not follow the company. The travel company Bus2alps is a great example of a business that does this. When scrolling through my own Instagram feed, I see a photo from the Bus2alps Instagram explaining their special offers almost everyday. This is a great marketing strategy because people may not know about their company until they see it pop up on their Instagram feed. It really helps the companies gain publicity and followers by purchasing advertisements.



Overall, Instagram is a very powerful social media website. It provides so many unique opportunities that other social media networks don’t. It shows just how quickly digital technology is advancing that even business are starting to rely on social media. Instagram is a great way to make connections for business purposes or just to share photos of the interesting things in your life.
